SCOTT DETWEILER'S "MADE IN NEW ORLEANS" FOR BEST CONTEMPORARY BLUES ALBUM

Members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences are reminded to consider casting their Grammy vote for Scott Detweiler's, "MADE IN NEW ORLEANS", in the category of Best Contemporary Blues Album.

SCOTT DETWEILER SIGNS WITH VAVV RECORDS

In March of 2007, Scott Detweiler signed a contract with Los Angeles based VAVV Records. The CD was released in February 2008.

During the course of his career, spanning over 20 (twenty) years, Detweiler has independently released 8 cds and countless live cds; however, this marks his first affiliation with a recording company. Although he was actually offered 2 (two) other recording contracts, including one with a major label (both offers were declined by Detweiler because they would not agree to his terms), over the years he has been passed on by dozens of agencies, management companies, publishers and recording companies, including A&M, Atlantic and Geffen.

VAVV Records recognizes Scott Detweiler as an important, original and prolific artist in the story of New Orleans music and will bring accelerated exposure to his sound on an international level.

SCOTT DETWEILER MAKES LOS ANGELES MUSIC HISTORY ON OCTOBER 6, 2007

Scott was the first blues artist/composer known ever to premiere a chamber piece and perform with his blues ensemble in the same concert setting.

Following a performance of two pieces by Mozart, Detweiler's "The Sun Will Rise"  (for string quartet and alto saxophone, composed in July 2007 about the Katrina disaster in New Orleans), premiered at the 430 seat Madrid Theater in Los Angeles.   The audience gave the 4 movement, 20 minute piece, an enthusiastic standing ovation.

After a brief intermission Detweiler, backed by Ed Cogan on piano, Sam Nee on bass, Paul Van De Riet on drums and Larry McRae on saxophones and flute (McRae also played the alto saxophone in "The Sun Will Rise"), took the stage for over an hour, performing selections from his upcoming VAVV Records Release.

KATRINA BROUGHT THE WATER

BETWEEN LAKE AND RIVER

Between Lake and River, Scott Detweiler's masterpiece tribute to New Orleans (his birthplace and hometown), is inspired by Lake Ponchartrain and the Mississippi River, between which the city lies.  The tracks (all penned by SD) are "The Angels of New Orleans", "Between Lake and River", "Ponchartrain", "Hurricane Jane", "Cane", "As The Crow Flies","Esplanade" and "Black Girls" (the only instrumental cut).   This is a songbook that captures the essence of the "city that care forgot" in a way that has not been captured by any other artist.  Scott produced the disc, played all of the instruments and sang all of the vocal harmonies ("Between Lake and River" contains a 'choir' of Scott singing fifteen different vocal tracks).  His voice soulfully tells the heroic stories of imaginary characters, set against the charming backdrop of mysticism and romance of the Crescent City, seen through his eyes and felt with his heart.  This is truly an album for people who love New Orleans.  -Southern Brother Music Review.

SLUMBER TONGUE

Slumber Tongue, Scott Detweiler’s release issued in 2004, is an unusual and eclectic collection of instrumental pieces suitable for concert, theatre, ballet, television and film.  It is a virtual “gumbo blend” of styles from blues, to jazz, to classical and back to rock. The instrumentation of the eleven compositions (over 46 minutes duration) ranges from solo acoustic guitar and solo piano, to full concert pieces including marimba, trumpet, oboe, Native American flutes and tribal percussion.  The fact that he single handedly composed, produced and performed virtually all of the instruments is, of course, a feat unto itself; however, what may be most striking about this CD is the diverse array of tonalities, rhythms, textures and themes not often found in one collection by a single composer.   It is in this regard that the work on Slumber Tongue may loosely be compared to that of the late American composer Frank Zappa, to whose memory this CD happens to be dedicated.    Of Detweiler’s six releases, this is the only one, besides “String Quartet Number One and Two”, that does not feature his incredibly soulful vocal ability.  This “slumber” of his “tongue” allows the listener to experience his immense diversity and depth as a composer and, at the same time, marvel at his seasoned ability as an instrumentalist (the guitar work on this CD, alone, firmly establishes him as an important American guitarist of our time).  Slumber Tongue is the latest chronicle in Scott Detweiler’s musical odyssey.   -American CD Examiner.

QUOTABLES

"Shauna asked me would the wine be vegan-friendly and I lied and said, “Yeah totally,” because I’m just not that nice, so off we went to Infusion Gallery which is part of downtown LA’s art walk; there was music by Scott Detweiler, it was folk, it was 80s, it was funk, it was a lot of things going on with the music, but there are lots of things going on at Infusion; 828 Main Street, downtown LA, it’s a gigantic space."   -Teka-Lark Lo, LA REAL
