Lyrics

PEOPLE by Scott Detweiler

It was just a kingdom on the countryside
On a riverside a castle stood
And he was just a leader of a people
Sharin customs, a common tongue
But there were gardens and vineyards
There were pretty things
Many pieces of power
Many furnishings
His wealth gave him plenty
But he wasn’t satisfied
And it tugged upon his conscience
Day and night

She was just a worker in his castle walls
But he noticed her, he never tried
And as he tried to court her she did hesitate
For she was promised to a simple man
But the king did promise her the gardens
And the furnishings
And everything more
That being queen would bring
Her friends said to “take his hand
Forever by his side
And you’ll be forever cared for
Day and night”

We are people
Only people
We can never know the way
As we go from day to day
We can look back
When we’re older
And wonder how our good lives would have been

Seven children later, six have gone away
Her hands are harder, her knees are tired
Often does she wonder what she would have been
Had she taken the royal side
But when she looks to her husband
And his loving eyes
Through their many years together
He’s been right there by her side
For he is her fortune
No one else will ever feel
She’s been blessed like most of us
Will never be

She’s been blessed like most of us
Will never be

We are people
Only people
We can never know the way
As we go from day to day
We can look back
When we’re older
We can think about the way it was
The way that everybody does
And wonder how our good lives would have been

How they would have been
How they would have been
